Who this guide is for
Any taxpayer who filed a federal income tax return and is owed a refund. You will need information from your own tax return to check your status.
- Processing time
- E-filed returns: about 3 weeks. Paper returns: 6 weeks or more. Refund status is usually available 24 hours after e-filing a current-year return.
- Refund amount
- Amount varies by return
Information the official service may require
- Your Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) — entered only on irs.gov
- Your filing status (single, married filing jointly, head of household)
- Your exact refund amount
- The tax year of the return
Do not send these documents to ClaimPayout.
How to use the official process
- Check your refund status using "Where's My Refund?" or the IRS2Go app. Status is available 24 hours after e-filing a current-year return, 3 days after e-filing a prior-year return, or 4 weeks after mailing a paper return.
- If your refund check was marked as sent but never arrived, first confirm the full processing time has passed — you should receive the check within 4 weeks of the issue date.
- Request a refund trace: single, married filing separately, or head of household filers can start a trace in the refund tracker, the IRS app, or the automated hotline at 800-829-1954.
- Married filing jointly? Call 800-829-1040 or complete and mail Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund.
- The IRS will review the trace. An uncashed check less than a year old is canceled and reissued (usually within 4 weeks). A cashed check is reviewed by the Bureau of the Fiscal Service (BFS), which can take up to 6 weeks.
Important warnings
- Enter your SSN or ITIN only on the official IRS site (irs.gov). The IRS will not contact you by text or email asking for this information.
- The automated refund hotline is 800-829-1954; the amended-return hotline is 866-464-2050.
Questions about this program
When does refund status become available?
Status is available 24 hours after you e-file a current-year return, 3 days after you e-file a prior-year return, and 4 weeks after you mail a paper return.
How long does it take to receive a refund?
About 3 weeks from e-filing, or 6 weeks or more after mailing a paper return. Some returns need extra review, which can delay the refund.
Why might my refund be delayed?
Common causes include mistakes on the return, claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (held by law until mid-February) or Additional Child Tax Credit, an amended return, or an injured spouse relief request.
Does the IRS charge to trace or reissue a refund?
No. The IRS never charges a fee to check your status, trace a missing refund, or reissue a check. Beware of anyone asking for payment to "expedite" your refund.
